Contemporary Heroes

I don't believe in Heroes!

According to the Greek and Roman Mythology, heroes were sons/daughters
of Gods with human beings. That crossing-over resulted on human beings
with extraordinary powers, usually portrayed in their phenomenal
physical strength or their irresistible beauty. When reading about these
legends it is easy to fall in love with them, however, we must remember
that those heroes were worshipped by some and abominable by others. It is
all a matter of perspective. The Roman / Greek heroes had feelings and
flaws just like any other person and they were not as fair as what a
hero is expected to be. They had their own agenda. They were constantly
moved by either ambition or revenge since their life had tragedy written
all over it from the beginning to end.
History is filled with heroes. Jesus and Muhammad are heroes for
Catholics and Muslims respectively but both are either despised or ignored
by many other kinds. Moreover, the Ghandi's were venerated by most
Hindus but hated by the Sikhs. I am sure even political figures such as Hitler and Mussolini were adored by many...
We can see many heroes / monsters today, people with power - on power - exercising it according to their beliefs of what is right and wrong. However, just like truth, right & wrong have many sides.
The list goes on and on from George Bush, Yasser Arafat, Sadam Russein and Bin Laden to The Pope John Paul II. Those are people we look up to and look down at. People who deserve somewhat admiration for reaching positions where one can actually make a difference in the world, but somewhat the only difference they made was too F@#$% up the human relations on Planet Earth and destroy the hopes of cultivating a more accepting humanity. How sad...
